Best Budget PLA Filament
Last reviewed
The best budget PLA is a low-cost spool whose maker publishes a diameter tolerance, a nozzle temperature range and the net weight, on a spool your printer or feeder accepts. Choose among spools that meet those criteria by price per kg, rather than buying the lowest price with no specs behind it.
Right now the lowest verified price per kg on this list is $8.18/kg, for JAYO PLA in Black.
Five traits of a budget spool worth buying
Budget filament does not need to be a gamble. What turns a cheap spool into a sensible one is documentation you can read before paying. Look for all five of these.
- A published diameter tolerance. A plus-or-minus figure in millimeters, on the brand's own site, is a commitment you can hold the maker to. Without one you are guessing at how evenly the filament will extrude.
- A stated nozzle and bed temperature range. A range gives your first print a sensible starting point and shows the maker has characterized its own material.
- Color availability within one line. A line sold in many colors under the same spec sheet lets you reorder a shade, or switch shades, without re-tuning. You cannot verify batch-to-batch color matching before buying, so lean on what is documented: one line, one set of settings.
- Spool compatibility. Outer diameter, width, hub size and material (plastic or cardboard) decide whether the spool runs in your holder or multi-color feeder.
- Net weight clearly stated. Price per kg is only as honest as the weight behind it. A spool that says "1kg net" on the brand page and the label is easier to trust than one that gives a vague "about 1kg".

How those traits look in published specs
The table below collects figures that manufacturers publish on their own pages for several lower-cost PLA lines. It is in alphabetical order and is not a ranking. Each brand name links to the page the numbers come from.
| Brand and line | Stated tolerance | Nozzle range | Bed range | Net weights listed |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Anycubic PLA Basic (opens in a new tab) | ±0.02mm | 190 to 230°C | 55 to 65°C | 1kg |
| Creality Hyper PLA (opens in a new tab) | ±0.03mm | 190 to 230°C | 25 to 60°C | 1kg |
| eSUN PLA+ (opens in a new tab) | ±0.03mm | 210 to 230°C | 45 to 60°C | 1kg, 3kg, 5kg |
| GEEETECH PLA (opens in a new tab) | ±0.02mm | 185 to 215°C | 25 to 60°C | 1kg |
| JAYO PLA (opens in a new tab) | ±0.02mm | 200 to 210°C | 60 to 80°C | 1.1kg |
| Overture PLA (opens in a new tab) | ±0.02mm | 190 to 220°C | 25 to 60°C | 1kg |
| SUNLU PLA (opens in a new tab) | ±0.02mm | 200 to 240°C | 50 to 60°C | 250g to 5kg |
A few things stand out when you read the columns rather than the rows.
Tolerance figures cluster. Most of these lines state ±0.02mm or ±0.03mm. For reference, Prusa states ±0.02mm for Prusament PLA (opens in a new tab). A published number is a claim, not a measurement you have seen, but its presence still separates these lines from listings that give no figure at all.
Temperature windows differ in width. JAYO's 200 to 210°C is a tight window, while SUNLU's 200 to 240°C is broad. Neither is wrong. A tight window tells you exactly where to start; a broad one leaves more for you to tune. Bed ranges vary too: JAYO lists 60 to 80°C, higher than the others, which matters if your bed heats slowly.
Spool details are the hardest trait to pin down. Among the lines above, GEEETECH's page is the one that gave full spool dimensions, listing a 197mm outer diameter, 59mm width and 74mm hub. Others describe compatibility in words instead: eSUN offers a printable adapter for running its cardboard spool in a Bambu Lab AMS, and Anycubic says PLA Basic carries identification chips for its ACE Pro. If you run a feeder, this is the column to chase down before buying.
Balancing price per kg against what you can check
Price per kg tells you what the filament costs. The five traits tell you how likely the money is well spent. A practical way to weigh them:
- Within a dollar or two per kg, pick the better documented spool. A small premium for a stated tolerance, a temperature range and clear net weight is cheap insurance against a failed print.
- Do not pay extra for claims you cannot check. "Clog free", "premium grade" and "perfect winding" are marketing. They should never outweigh a published number.
- Match the spool to your hardware first. A cheaper spool that will not fit your feeder is not cheaper once you buy an adapter or move it to an external holder.
- Buy PLA+ only if you need it. Modified PLA formulas vary by brand. The PLA vs PLA+ guide explains when the extra toughness is worth paying for.
Once a roll arrives, start in the middle of the brand's stated nozzle range and adjust. The print temperature guide walks through that process.
How the live grid on this page works
The grid lists in-stock, non-sample spools under $20 per kg whose diameter and temperature specs pla.deals has matched against the manufacturer's own page. It is sorted by price per kg, which is the listing price divided by the combined net weight of every spool in the listing. Every price carries the time it was verified against Amazon and switches to "Check price at Amazon" if it has not been reconfirmed within 24 hours.
That makes the grid a shortlist, not a verdict. Every spool on it clears the documentation bar; which one is right depends on your printer, your colors and how much you print. If you only care about the lowest cost, the cheapest PLA ranking drops the documentation requirement. If you want a firm price ceiling, see PLA under $15 per kg. The full criteria are on how we rank.
Frequently asked questions
Why is there no single top pick on this page?
pla.deals does not run its own print trials, so naming one spool as the best would be a guess. Instead, the grid shows every spool that meets documented criteria, sorted by price per kg, and you choose based on fit and color.
Does a stated ±0.02mm tolerance guarantee good prints?
No. It is the manufacturer's claim about diameter, and good results also depend on dry filament, correct temperature and a tuned printer. A stated tolerance is still a better signal than none.
Why does this grid stop at $20 per kg?
It keeps the page about budget spools while leaving room for documented lines that cost slightly more than the very cheapest options. The cheapest and under $15 pages cover tighter price limits.
Should a budget buyer choose matte or silk PLA?
Choose by the look you want, then apply the same five checks. Specialty finishes are judged on documentation the same way as standard PLA, though their stated speeds and temperatures can differ from a brand's basic line.
