5kg PLA Filament: One Big Spool or Five Small Ones
Last reviewed
5kg of PLA comes either as five 1kg spools or as a single 5kg reel, and the choice depends on your hardware: feeders such as Creality's CFS take 1kg spools, while a 5kg reel needs a sturdy external holder. 5kg is a good middle ground when 10kg would take too long to use or too much space to keep dry.
Right now the lowest verified price per kg on this list is $12.00/kg, for SUNLU PLA in Black.

Two different products sold as 5kg
Search for 5kg PLA and you will see two formats that behave nothing alike once they reach your desk.
Five 1kg spools in one pack. Standard reels, usually sealed individually, sometimes in five colors and sometimes all one. Each spool handles like any other 1kg reel.
One 5kg spool. A single large reel, sold directly by some manufacturers. Polymaker offers PolyLite PLA (opens in a new tab) at 5kg net alongside its 1kg and 3kg sizes, and eSUN lists 1kg, 3kg and 5kg weights for eSUN PLA+ (opens in a new tab). These reels are wider and heavier than standard spools, and that is where fit becomes the deciding question.
Will a 5kg spool fit your printer?
Start with the built-in spool holder. Most consumer printers ship with a holder sized for 1kg reels, often a short arm or a pin on top of or behind the frame. A 5kg reel is far heavier, with a larger outer diameter and often a different hub size, so it usually sits on a separate floor or bench stand that lets it turn freely. Check three things against whatever holder you plan to use:
- Outer diameter, so the reel clears the frame or stand.
- Width, so it sits between the holder's guides.
- Hub hole size, so it slides onto the arm or roller without binding.
Multi-spool feeders are stricter, because their bays are built around one standard reel size.
| Feeder | Accepts | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Creality CFS | 1kg spool, 197 to 202mm diameter, up to 68mm wide | Creality CFS manual (opens in a new tab) |
| Creality CFS-C | 1kg spool, 197 to 202mm diameter, 42 to 68mm wide | Creality (opens in a new tab) |
| Anycubic ACE 2 Pro | Flange 195 to 200mm, width 60 to 68mm | Anycubic (opens in a new tab) |
For scale, GEEETECH publishes a typical 1kg reel as 197mm across and 59mm wide with a 74mm hub for its PLA (opens in a new tab). A 5kg reel has to be bigger than that to hold five times the filament, which puts it outside every feeder in the table. We could not confirm Bambu Lab's AMS spool limits from Bambu's own site, so check Bambu's documentation if you print through an AMS or AMS lite.
The rule of thumb is simple. If your color changes run through a feeder, buy five 1kg spools. If you print one color from an external holder, a single 5kg reel is an option. The printer finder shows which models in our catalog come with a filament system.
When five 1kg spools are the better buy
- You use a feeder. Every reel fits a bay.
- You want more than one color. A five-pack can split across colors or across printers.
- Storage is tight. One opened reel at a time keeps the other four sealed and dry.
- You move spools between machines. Small reels travel easily; a heavy one does not.
When one 5kg spool wins
- Long single-color runs. One reel means fewer swaps in the middle of a batch, and fewer chances of a print running out.
- A farm with dedicated stands. If each printer already has an external holder, big reels reduce handling.
- Less reel waste. One empty spool instead of five.
The catch is moisture. A 5kg reel stays open for as long as it takes you to print five kilograms, so the last kilogram has spent the longest exposed. Keep the reel in a dry box or bag it with desiccant between sessions. Anycubic, for example, recommends drying its PLA+ (opens in a new tab) before use, and a large reel gives moisture more time to matter.
When 5kg is smarter than 10kg
A 10kg bundle often looks better on paper, but 5kg can be the sensible size in these situations:
- You are trying a new brand. Commit 5kg, confirm the line prints well on your machine, then scale up.
- Your monthly use is modest. If 10kg would take most of a year, 5kg stays fresher.
- You have one printer. Ten spools for a single machine is a lot of shelf space and a long rotation.
- Upfront spend matters. Half the outlay, for a per kg figure that may be close to the larger pack.
If those do not apply and you are running several printers on one color, the 10kg page is the next step up.
Reading a 5kg listing for per kg
pla.deals divides the listing price by the total net filament weight in the box, 5,000 grams for a true 5kg offer, and shows the result per kg next to the time it was last checked. Before trusting any listing, confirm the per spool weight: "5 rolls" with no weight may be smaller reels, and reels of 250g or less are labelled samples here and kept out of cheapest rankings. The price per kg explainer covers the calculation.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a special holder for a 5kg spool?
Usually yes. Built-in holders on most consumer printers are designed for 1kg reels. A free-standing spool stand with rollers sized for large reels lets the spool turn without dragging on the extruder.
Can I wind a 5kg reel onto smaller spools?
It is possible with an empty spool and a rewinder, and it is one way to get a large reel's filament into a feeder. Rewinding by hand risks crossed loops that tangle later, so go slowly and keep tension steady.
How many prints is 5kg?
Divide 5,000 grams by the weight your slicer reports for a typical job. A 25g part gives 200 copies; a 250g part gives 20. Subtract a share for failed prints and purge.
Is a 5kg spool easier to store than five 1kg spools?
It takes less shelf space but is harder to keep dry once opened, because the whole 5kg is exposed for the full time you use it. Five sealed reels let you open one kilogram at a time.
