AMS Compatible PLA: Spools That Feed Reliably in the AMS and AMS lite

Quick recommendation

"AMS compatible" is mostly a question about the reel, not the plastic. A spool feeds well when it is the right width, sits snugly on the hub rollers, turns without wobbling and has firm flanges. Bambu filament is not required: any 1.75mm PLA on a reel that meets those tests can go in the unit. Before you buy, check three numbers on the listing or the maker's page (spool width, outer diameter and the hole in the middle) and what the reel is made of.

On the A1 and A1 mini with the AMS lite, that check is concrete because Bambu publishes the limits. On the P1S, P1P and H2D with the original AMS, you have to measure, since no reachable Bambu page states them. Cardboard reels are fine in the AMS lite and need a ring in the AMS.

AMS lite limits in numbers

Bambu's AMS lite store page (opens in a new tab) gives the window:

Width is easy to meet; most 1kg reels fall inside it. The hub figure is where reels from smaller brands can miss. Two lines in our research publish full dimensions, and both show why measuring pays off. GEEETECH PLA (opens in a new tab) lists a 197mm reel, 59mm wide, with a 74mm hub hole. ZIRO PLA PRO (opens in a new tab) lists roughly 203mm across, 63mm wide, with a 60mm hub. Both widths fit, but both hub holes are larger than 58mm, so the reel may sit loose and wobble on the holder. The pla.deals table checks width and overall diameter where a feeder publishes them; it does not check hub size, so compare that yourself.

The original AMS: measure first

For the AMS used with the P1 series and H2D, spool limits were not published on any Bambu page we could reach, including the P1S technical data sheet. pla.deals therefore states no numbers and adds no width condition for these printers. Measure the width and outer diameter of a reel that already feeds well in your unit, compare new spools against it, and check Bambu's own documentation for the current figures.

Cardboard spools and adapter rings

Cardboard reels can wear where feeder rollers turn the spool by its rim: the edge scuffs, sheds fibers and loses grip. Filament makers say so themselves. ELEGOO (opens in a new tab) offers a printable filament ring for its cardboard spools because the AMS rubs the paper rim and makes it delaminate. eSUN (opens in a new tab) provides a printable 1kg cardboard spool adapter for AMS users. Polymaker (opens in a new tab) says its spools now have hardened edges that roll well in the AMS.

Your options for a cardboard reel in the original AMS are an adapter ring clipped over each flange, respooling onto an empty plastic reel, or the external spool holder. On the AMS lite, Bambu's statement covers paper spools, so none of that is required.

Heavy spools, refills and reusable spools

Spools over 1kg are the most common size mistake. A multi-kilogram reel is often larger across than a 1kg reel and much heavier to turn. SUNLU, for example, lists PLA from 250g to 5kg on its product page (opens in a new tab); only the 1kg size belongs in a feeder. If you buy multipacks of 1kg reels instead, you get the bulk price per kg without the size problem. pla.deals computes price per kg as the listing price divided by the total net filament weight of every spool in it.

Refills, sold as a bare coil with no spool, need a reusable reel. Check that reel against the same width and hub limits as any other spool, seat the coil fully before releasing its retaining ties, and cut the ties in the order the maker describes so the outer turns do not spring loose.

How pla.deals marks feeder conditions

Each row in the table carries one of four states. On feeder printers, these conditions turn "Compatible" into "Compatible with conditions":

• Cardboard spool on the original AMS: fit an adapter ring, respool or use the external holder.
• Spool wider or larger than a published limit: use the external holder or respool.
• Any single spool heavier than 1kg: the larger size goes on the external holder.

"Not recommended" covers hard mismatches, such as carbon fiber and glow PLA on the A1, A1 mini and P1S: Bambu lists fiber-reinforced filament as not recommended on those printers, and pla.deals groups abrasive glow PLA with it. "Not verified" means a filament maker's page did not give us the facts to confirm a match. Polymaker PolyLite PLA still carries the cardboard condition on the P1S, because the condition is set by what the printer maker documents, not by the spool brand's claim.

Frequently asked questions

The AMS keeps reporting a feed failure on one cardboard spool. What fixes it?

Inspect the rims for fraying or flattened spots; a worn edge slips on the rollers. Fit an adapter ring or respool onto plastic. If the rims look fine, check for a tangle by pulling a meter off by hand.

Why does a spool wobble or click in my AMS lite?

A hub hole larger than 58mm lets the reel shift on the holder. Measure it, and print or buy a hub adapter if it is oversized.

How do I stop tangles in the AMS?

Always clip the loose end into the flange hole when you unload a spool, so the outer turns never loosen. A crossed turn from the factory shows up as sudden resistance; unwind past it by hand.

Do I need Bambu filament for the AMS to work?

No. No Bambu page we cite requires it. Set the filament type and color manually for other brands, and keep the reel within the limits above.
