PLA for the Bambu Lab P1S: Choosing Spools for the Enclosure and the AMS

Quick recommendation for the P1S

For most P1S owners, the cleanest choice is a 1.75mm PLA on a plastic reel from a brand that publishes its temperatures. Those lines come out Compatible in the table below with nothing to do first. Cardboard reels print just as well once they are mounted so the AMS does not wear the rim, which is why they carry a condition rather than a warning. Bambu's P1S technical data sheet (opens in a new tab) puts PLA on its "Ideal" list as a material, so any brand qualifies, Bambu's own included.

The P1S is the one printer in this group where all four compatibility labels appear, which makes it a good place to see how they work:

1. Compatible: the filament maker publishes a 1.75mm diameter and a nozzle range under 300°C, Bambu lists PLA as ideal, and the reel raises no feeder concern.
2. Compatible with conditions: the same evidence holds, but the spool needs a step before it goes in the AMS. On the P1S that step is almost always about a cardboard reel, as with Polymaker PolyLite PLA (opens in a new tab), eSUN PLA-Matte (opens in a new tab) and Duramic PLA Plus (opens in a new tab).
3. Not verified: a piece of evidence is missing, usually the maker's temperature range or diameter. A cardboard note can still appear in the condition text, as it does for ELEGOO PLA (opens in a new tab), but the line cannot rise above Not verified until the gap is filled. Bambu's own PLA lines land here too, because Bambu's filament pages block automated reads.
4. Not recommended: Bambu's data sheet rules the material out, which on the P1S applies to filled PLA.

P1S specs that matter for PLA

The data sheet and Bambu's US store parameters give these values:

The enclosure is the spec PLA buyers most often overlook. PLA softens at a low temperature compared with ABS or ASA, and warm air trapped around the print head can soften filament before it reaches the melt zone, which shows up as clogs or droopy overhangs on long jobs. Opening the top lid or front door for PLA is a common precaution. The enclosure earns its keep with the higher-temperature materials on Bambu's list, not with PLA.

Temperature and bed limits are not a concern: the warmest PLA nozzle range in our data is Anycubic PLA High Speed at 190 to 260°C (opens in a new tab), and no PLA we track asks for more than an 80°C bed.

What Bambu's P1S material list means for PLA buyers

Bambu's data sheet sorts materials into three groups. "Ideal" covers PLA, PETG, TPU, ABS, ASA, PVA and PET. "Capable" covers PA and PC. "Not recommended" covers carbon and glass fiber reinforced polymer. Compared with the A1, where Bambu lists ABS and ASA as not recommended, the P1S moves both into the ideal group, the clearest practical difference between the two lists.

For PLA, that breadth means choosing by finish and handling rather than by printer limits. Standard PLA gives the crispest detail. Matte lines hide layer lines but often run a warmer bed. Silk lines usually carry lower speed ratings, so a P1S profile tuned for basic PLA will be too fast for them. Getting PLA spools through the original AMS

Bambu does not publish spool limits for the original AMS on any page we could reach, so the P1S table cannot compare a reel's width or diameter against the unit. That leaves the checking to you:

• Measure the reel width across the outer flanges and its full diameter, then compare them with the AMS documentation that came with your unit or with an empty AMS slot.
• Favor brands that print their reel dimensions. GEEETECH (opens in a new tab) lists 197mm across and 59mm wide, and ZIRO (opens in a new tab) lists 203mm across and 63mm wide, so you can check fit before buying.
• Remember that third-party spools need their material and color set for the AMS slot by hand rather than read from a Bambu spool.

Cardboard gets a condition because Bambu says nothing about paper reels in the AMS on the pages we reached. Filament makers fill some of that gap themselves. Polymaker says its spools now have hardened edges that roll well in the AMS (opens in a new tab). eSUN offers a printable 1kg cardboard spool adapter (opens in a new tab) for AMS users. ELEGOO notes that the AMS can rub the paper tray and cause it to delaminate, and adapts its spools for that. The table stays cautious either way; the maker's own statement tells you how much effort the condition will take.

This is also why a line can read Compatible on the A1 but carry a condition here. Bambu's AMS lite page says its rotary holder supports paper spools; nothing equivalent exists for the original AMS on pages we could check.

Weight is the last check. Any listing with a single spool over 1kg gets a condition, so large reels from the bulk PLA range belong on the external spool holder. Compatibility warnings: filled PLA in the P1S

Bambu PLA-CF and Bambu PLA Glow read Not recommended. The P1S data sheet lists carbon and glass fiber reinforced polymer as not recommended, and the stock nozzle is stainless steel rather than hardened. Our rules treat glow, carbon fiber, glass fiber and metal-filled PLA as one family, because the hard particles in all of them wear a soft nozzle bore. The data sheet offers other nozzle sizes but no hardened option, so no condition exists that would make filled PLA acceptable here.

Frequently asked questions

PLA softens or the nozzle clogs on long P1S prints. What helps?

Let heat out. Open the top lid or front door while printing PLA, keep the nozzle inside the maker's published range, and make sure the filament is dry. If clogs persist, slow the profile to the filament's rated speed.

The AMS struggles with a cardboard spool. What should I try?

Fit an adapter ring over the cardboard rim, print the adapter the maker supplies if there is one, or respool onto an empty plastic reel. Running the spool from the external holder avoids the issue entirely.

Why does the same filament show Compatible on the A1 but a condition on the P1S?

The two printers use different feeders. Bambu documents paper spool support for the AMS lite, but publishes no cardboard guidance for the original AMS on pages we could reach, so the P1S table asks for an extra step.

Can I run a 3kg spool on the P1S?

Yes, from the external spool holder. The table flags any spool over 1kg because it is not meant for the AMS, but the printer itself takes the filament like any other 1.75mm PLA.
