Best Wood PLA Filament: Comparing Wood-Filled Spools
Last reviewed
Wood PLA is PLA blended with fine wood powder or fiber, which gives prints a grained, matte look and asks for its own temperature, speed and drying settings. A strong pick states its wood content, nozzle and bed range and speed limit on the maker's page, so check those and your nozzle size before choosing among in-stock spools by price per kg.

What wood PLA actually contains
Wood PLA is a composite: ordinary PLA carrying a share of real wood particles. The PLA does the structural work and makes it print like PLA; the wood gives a fibrous, matte surface and a warm, natural tone. Buyers also pick it because finished parts can be sanded and painted or stained for a crafted look, which is why wood fill is chosen for planters, picture frames, desk organizers, game pieces and decorative boxes.
Makers describe the fill in different terms. SUNLU lists 15% wood powder (opens in a new tab) for PLA Wood, and AMOLEN states 15% real wood fiber (opens in a new tab). eSUN describes its line as a mixture of PLA and recycled wood particles (opens in a new tab) without giving a percentage, and ELEGOO says its PLA Wood is infused with premium wood powder (opens in a new tab), also without a figure. A stated percentage is useful because it tells you how much of the strand is filler rather than PLA.

How wood PLA specs compare
| Brand and line | Wood content | Nozzle | Bed | Speed |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| AMOLEN PLA Wood (opens in a new tab) | 15% wood fiber | 180 to 210°C | 30 to 65°C | under 250mm/s |
| eSUN PLA-Wood (opens in a new tab) | not stated | not stated | not stated | not stated |
| ELEGOO PLA Wood (opens in a new tab) | not stated | not stated | not stated | not stated |
| SUNLU PLA Wood (opens in a new tab) | 15% wood powder | 200 to 220°C | 50 to 60°C | 230mm/s or less in the spec table |
Two things stand out. First, the temperature windows sit low and narrow compared with many standard PLAs. AMOLEN tops out at 210°C and SUNLU at 220°C, whereas several standard and PLA+ lines in our research run to 230°C or higher. Second, documentation is patchy: half of the wood lines above publish no print settings on the product page we checked, which is a real gap when the material behaves differently from plain PLA.
A note on SUNLU's speed figure: the spec table lists 230mm/s or less, while marketing copy elsewhere on the same page mentions a higher number. When a page disagrees with itself, plan around the figure in the specification table.
What makers say, and do not say, about nozzles
Wood particles are solid, and a common question is whether they wear or clog a nozzle. None of the four maker pages above gives a nozzle material requirement for wood PLA, and none recommends a hardened nozzle. AMOLEN mentions a 0.4mm nozzle only as the setup behind its mechanical data. That stands in contrast to glow-in-the-dark fills, where eSUN explicitly recommends hardened steel or ruby nozzles, and to carbon fiber PLA, which Bambu Lab lists among materials not recommended for its stainless-nozzle A1.
This site follows the makers here. Its compatibility notes flag carbon fiber, glass fiber, metal and glow fills on brass nozzles with no hardened option, and on printers whose makers advise against fiber-filled filament, but they do not flag wood PLA unless a maker says so. If you plan to print wood fill heavily on a brass nozzle, such as the one on Creality's Ender-3 V3 SE (opens in a new tab), it is still sensible to inspect the nozzle occasionally, but no maker in our research states that it wears out faster.
Clogging is the more practical concern. Particles and a very fine nozzle are a poor combination, so keep to 0.4mm or larger for wood PLA rather than the 0.2mm nozzles some printers offer as options, and avoid letting a loaded hot end sit at temperature for long periods between prints.
Drying, retraction and storage
AMOLEN publishes unusually complete handling advice for its wood line: retraction of 1.0 to 1.5mm at 35 to 45mm/s, cooling fan on, drying at 55 ± 5°C for 6 to 8 hours before printing, and keeping printing humidity below 20% relative humidity, ideally sealed with desiccant. Wood fiber is hygroscopic, so a damp spool is more likely to string and to print with a rough, fuzzy surface. eSUN ships its wood PLA vacuum sealed with a desiccant bag.
What makes a wood spool a strong pick
- A stated wood content. It is the clearest sign the maker has documented the blend.
- A published nozzle and bed range. With wood fill, the narrow window matters; guessing from a standard PLA profile is likely to run too hot.
- A speed limit. AMOLEN and SUNLU both state one; lines that do not leave you to find it yourself.
- Handling guidance on drying and retraction.
- The right diameter. SUNLU sells PLA Wood in 1.75mm, 2.85mm and 3.00mm. Confirm 1.75mm before buying for most current printers.
- Spool fit for feeders. ELEGOO gives a 154 ± 10g empty spool weight for its wood reel and publishes a ring to stop an AMS rubbing the spool's paper tray. Our AMS filament page covers what else to check.
On price, pla.deals calculates price per kg by dividing the listing price by the total net filament weight in the listing, which keeps SUNLU's range of sizes from 0.25kg to 5kg comparable with single 1kg spools.
Common mistakes with wood PLA
- Printing at standard PLA temperatures. If your usual profile runs at 215 to 225°C, it is already above AMOLEN's stated 210°C maximum. Our print temperature guide shows how to step down.
- Using a fine nozzle for detail work, then fighting partial clogs.
- Skipping drying on a spool that has been open for weeks.
- Expecting real timber strength. The part is still mostly PLA; the wood is a surface and appearance feature.
If you want a flat, natural-looking finish without the filler, the matte PLA page covers lines that hide layer lines without particles. For an overview of all finishes, see the best PLA filament page, or filter to wood in the filament finder.
Frequently asked questions
Does wood PLA need a hardened steel nozzle?
None of the wood PLA makers in our research says so. SUNLU, AMOLEN, eSUN and ELEGOO give no nozzle material requirement for their wood lines. Keep to a 0.4mm or larger nozzle to reduce clog risk, and check a brass nozzle occasionally if you print wood fill often.
What temperature should I print wood PLA at?
Use the range on your spool's product page. AMOLEN lists 180 to 210°C and SUNLU lists 200 to 220°C, both lower at the top than many standard PLAs. Start mid-range and adjust in small steps.
Can wood PLA be sanded and stained?
Many buyers choose it for exactly that, but none of the makers in our research publishes finishing instructions, and results depend on the blend. Try sanding and staining a scrap print before finishing a final part.
Is wood PLA safe to run in an AMS?
It can be, subject to the reel. ELEGOO supplies a ring for its cardboard wood spool to stop AMS wear on the paper tray. Dry the filament first, since moisture adds to feeding problems in long feeder paths.
